Ambition is a wonderful thing when it pays off. How many times have we watched a slugger walk up to the plate, look the pitcher in the eye, and lift an arm to point where the ball is going to land somewhere in the next state, only to strike out? Well, the new President has just stepped up to the plate. We have the TARP bailout plan carried over from the last Administration. The new Stimulus Package has been passed. Now comes the budget. Anyone doing the math will find the number of zeros adding on to the deficit reaching epidemic proportions. It seems the country is proposing to plunge even deeper into debt when it’s already in a recession, fighting two wars – one in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan – and facing a meltdown in the banking and car industries. Unemployment is at historic highs and, if the trend continues, the amount of tax collected will fall. Yet, the President is proposing major reform of the health care service. Is he biting off more than he can chew?

According to the latest figures, there are around 306 million people in the US and nearly 15%, that’s about 45 million, do not have any kind of medical insurance. What do they do? Well, when they fall ill, they crowd into the emergency rooms and seek help from the underfunded public hospital system. There are two results. The first is that people wait too long before they go to hospital and, when they get there, receive an inadequate level of care. The second is that it places a serious financial burden on everyone. The emergency room in a conventional hospital has to cover its costs but, when the uninsured patients have no money, the only option is to increase the charges to the insured patients. This burden has been particularly hard on the employers’ health plans and, to offset the increased premiums, employers have been passing some of the cost on to their employees – a forced pay cut. The public hospitals must beg for increased funding from local, state and federal bodies where budgets are already in deficit.

There is a new mood in government to do something about health insurance. In effect, the ideal plan would be to move to a single-payer plan which is the norm in the rest of the world, but that would upset too many vested interests. So the current plan is to go for a major safety net for all currently uninsured. There is already a plan for uninsured children. The Administration is proposing an element in the new budget to move all uninsured adults on to a national plan. If this can pass through into law, which is not certain given the opposition of the Republican party, it will provide a bolt hole for all currently insured. If the premiums on private health insurance continue to rise, more will move on to the national plan which, over time, could produce a single-payer system in the US. Now that would be an interesting social experiment.

Every time you hear from your insurer, it’s usually bad news. The premium is going up again, the percentage of co-payments is increasing, there are new exceptions to coverage on some of the diseases you thought were covered. As a result, there are nearly 48 million uninsured people in the US. Even the middle class is finding it difficult. Although President Obama is making encouraging noises about reform, that’s all in the future. He hasn’t issued a plan. He’s waiting for Capitol Hill to come up with ideas. Like that’s going to produce fast results. In the meantime, it’s down to you to find affordable cover. Well, you’re in the right place. Every insurance company has some kind of presence online and there are increasing numbers of sites like this that let you search multiple insurers. But getting quotes directly and through sites like this is just the first step. You then have to take the time to compare what’s on offer. Simply choosing the one with the lowest premium is a recipe for disaster. If you’re unlucky and fall ill, you then find out you’re not covered for that disease or disorder, or that it comes at the top end of the co-payments scale and it’s going to run through your savings rapidly. So what should you do?

Let’s start with those low premiums. The majority of companies offer discounts to get you to jump ship. The cheap rates apply for the first twelve months and then the “normal” rates apply. There’s a temptation to run from one insurer to another at the end of each year. That way, you get some cover at discounted premiums but all the administrative hassle of changing the network of doctors and care providers. Just when you got to know one set, you’re introducing yourself to another. The other problem is there’s usually a catch. Some companies have a lead-in period when you pay all the bills or there’s a high level of co-payments during the first year. So it’s silvered words to get you to sign up and bigger bills for you if you fall ill. Always read the small print before you sign up!

So where can you get good value? Well, you can look at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Together, they can provide low-cost access to hospitals and physicians. The second option is a limited form of gambling. If you’re in reasonably good health, you can opt for a health insurance plan that only covers hospital and surgical treatment. That way, you’re covered against accidental injuries and emergencies, and delay paying for coverage on the diseases that tend to affect older people. Hopefully, the economy and your pay will have improved by the time the dangers of the coverage justify extending the policy. Health insurance should not be a gamble but, when the economy is so bad and household budgets are feeling the strain, tailoring the cover is the best way to save dollars.

No one wants to be left without coverage these days, right? Doctors understand this very well, and are willing to help even in restricted fashion. See what boundaries get left behind in order to get HMO approval.

If you think the relationships among physicians and insurance companies are driven by respect and friendship, you are utterly wrong. There is quite a tension especially when doctors have to face denials on HMO. The possibility of an HMO denial, which has increased these days. in conjunction with the stress involved around it, forces many doctors to provide not quite relevant information about their patients just to get the needed approval. In case the HMO rejects the patient’s request, the physician can file and appeal to the decision, however the likelihood of an insurance company to change its initial decision is rather low.

Independent studies suggest that doctors are likely to lie about their clients’ actual medical condition in case there is a high probability that the patient will be denied with coverage or his/her condition is severe. The general situation here is the more likely an HMO is to deny coverage with the patient, the more willing a doctor is to change medical records and provide modified information about the patient’s condition. They are even likely to lie in the first place, if they know that the coverage is likely to be denied, in order to avoid the second appeal.

The main peril of such a practice, is that such an innocent and white lie will be reflected in the medical record. And if it’s quite positive in the first place, there may be very serious problems when the patient decides to switch doctors or a more serious health problem is developed. Having this in mind, it really looks like doctors helping patients with their lies just in order to get an HMO approval, are actually running them into a much greater risk in the long run, which may have far more serious complications than a denied coverage.

There were many suggestion on how to improve such a situation in a way that would please all the parties involved. But the more you think of it, the better you realize that it’s a matter of collaboration between doctors and insurance companies to provide cheap health insurance to their clients in a relevant and timely fashion. The need in an adequate dialog between HMO’s and doctors will further be a problem as long as there’s not enough cheap health insurance to meet the needs of everyday patients. And it’s hard to define which of the parties is responsible for such a balance disruption, because to seems to be a vicious cycle, threatening all the system in general.

The newly elect President has declared reforming the health insurance system as his priority and it may be the chance the whole system was waiting for. All we are left with is to wait and see, what measures will be undertaken to change such a practice we have become very familiar with these recent years.

The US employers are well known all over the world for providing advantageous group insurance solutions to their employees. When you decide on group insurance in your enterprise, it is recommended to hire an insurance agent or broker. It may seem like the same thing, however there’s a substantial difference between them. Agents and brokers are different from the perspective of the entity they represent. Agents are working for the insurance company, whereas brokers hold the interests of policyholders (clients). But it doesn’t mean that only a broker can give you the most advantageous options, because the both will assist you with your policy in the long run. However, the first step before calling an agent or a broker is to study your local insurance market and see if there is any company that provides services meeting your exact insurance needs. Preemptive measures Before going to an agent or a broker with group insurance plans there are a few steps you might want to undertake in order to optimize your decision making process on this matter: 1. Outline an overall insurance plan 2. Divide the premium amounts to be paid by the employee and by the enterprise 3. Define the options to be standard in your package 4. Consider how many workers are eligible for group insurance An overall insurance plan requires you and your workers to define what is needed with a group insurance plan. It’s better to outline the standard options that you would like to see in your case, and then describe the additional ones. After you’ve taken this step it will be much easier for your broker or agent to provide adequate quote concerning the selection of features you want to see in your policy. Another important aspect when outlining the plan is dividing the amount of premium an employee will pay, and how much money will the company add to it. You are free to set either the standard flat fee, or divide the premium between employees. This is where it is also very important to decide which features have to be included in the standard package, and which are add-ons that the majority of your workers doesn’t feel to be necessary. For instance, if there are a lot of young women at your enterprise, it is likely that you would need substantial maternity coverage. By studying closely the situation with your staff you will be able to a good cheap health insurance coverage for your enterprise. In case you have a small but growing business, you might want to get a less costly insurance plan in the first place and see how it corresponds to your workers’ insurance needs as the enterprise evolves. Some small companies take HMO or PPO plans, and then switch to a full-scale health insurance plan for employees of their income and insurance needs demand to. It’s never too late to get a more costly plan, but carrying it right from the start might be not the best idea. Remember that the best way to get cheap health insurance for your enterprise is to adjust it to your and your employees’ exact needs and select only those features, that you really feel necessary.

When we grow older we start thinking about some things that we never thought of being younger. Will we be able to take care of our family – not just of one person but of everybody it consists of? Will we be able to satisfy our own needs? If you consider that one day you will need long-term care – it is better to start thinking of your options now. In-home Care In-home care is convenient and perfect for those who need some health-care assistance but prefer to remain home all the time. It is an alternative to nursing homes and other institutions. In-home care includes – health care, household help and personal care services. You can receive these services by hiring a private care assistant or by contacting a home health care agency in your area. Continuing care retirement communities There are such organizations as Continuing Care Retirement Communities. They offer you housing, meals, social activities, and health care ranging from minimal personal assistance to skilled nursing care. If your health state is good these communities are perfect for you, but if you aren’t proud of your health state – you might want to try another option. But we must warn you to be wise about any deal you are planning to submit to. Make sure you read your contract good before you sign it. Be aware of the requirements. You should know what you pay for. Nursing homes Nursing homes are like the final destination. It is for those people who are not able to take care of themselves at all. Unfortunately it happens. Let’s see the list of services nursing homes provide to their patients: Nursing care, which is provided by registered nurses or professional therapists Intermediate care or nursing and rehabilitative help provided as you need it by qualified medical personnel under the main doctor’s supervision. Custodial care or assistance with personal needs such as bathing, eating, or dressing. Before you decide your only option of the nursing home, please consider a few things. If you need some medical assistance – try to research on the level of assistance this nursing home is able to provide. Match it with the level of care you need and make up your mind. Your nursing home should really be a HOME for you. It needs to be clean and well kept. The staff should be caring and attentive. It is also extremely important. Take a family member or a friend of yours with you to investigate and ask for their honest opinion based on their impressions. Payment issues Nursing homes usually charge a fixed daily rate so you should not be confused about the price. If you feel like you are charged something you should not be charged – please don’t hesitate to ask for a written form of the services you will be provided and their costs. Normally, nursing houses are affordable. But it is always better to be covered. If you are a lucky owner of a health insurance – then your troubles with health can be solved by means of the health care deal. Health insurance is the key to a “happy today” without being scared of tomorrow.

If you are considering a trip overseas you might want to be super protected and well-insured. It also requires a lot of planning. Though some people might not agree but a health insurance is extremely important in the trip. As most of the cases and trips result as being successful and likely people do not meet any health problems, they consider the health insurance deal to be – the money spent in vain. But why do we think this? Isn’t our health the most important aspect of the trip, especially in some other country?

There are some health insurance plans that meet standard requirements. They are usually designed to cover extended period of international travel. Usually the managed health care plans cover emergency treatment regardless of where it is being received, but other types of care are typically limited to a local network of providers. It is a well-known statement: USA residents do not participate in the national well-being programs that are offered to residents of most European nations. Every independent agent you might ask will tell you that the most important information you should get before going overseas is to find out about the coverage you will have. You should inform the health insurance company you are dealing with about the country you want to visit, the purpose of your stay there and the period of time you will visit for.

People that travel much agree on the fact that the travel insurance is quite a necessary thing and may be a good solution in some cases. But usually, the travel insurance you will get will last no longer than half a year as the time of the insurance is always limited.

Travelers that usually spend more than six months abroad will go for a better type of health insurance. Those types of insurances are called – expatriate health insurances. Lloyd’s London, for example, are ready to offer USA residents that are living in other countries this type of insurance as Americans like to be protected especially well when they are traveling.

Expatriate health insurance plans do not have to be common. They can be adopted based on your basic requirements. In some extra cases you will get emergency treatment coverage, there is also a plan that includes maternity coverage, medical procedures that your health requires, such as acupuncture and chiropractic and in some necessary clinical case even the emergency evacuation. You should choose the plan taking into consideration your needs, your family’s needs and you upcoming travel plans.

When you have made up your mind about an expatriate plan, you will need to fill in a complicated application. Health insurance document consists of a few pages. You will be required to mention all of the health problems you family has met over the past 10 years, from broken legs to hereditary conditions to substance abuse. The payment for an expatriate plan will definitely differ depending on the features you choose; the number of family members to be covered; the age, sex, and state of health of each family member; your travel itinerary; and various other factors that might be important for the health insurance case and the people requiring it, of course.

If you have lately lost your health coverage, but still are expecting to receive new coverage during a year, a short run health coverage plan might be what you need at the moment. To learn more, simply continue reading this article.

Short run health coverage – what is it?

Several insurance policies proffer policies that are made to wash off people through short intervals in sickness insurance coverage. These policies carry the name of temporary or short-term health coverage policies.

While it might be workable for you to find a short-term insurance policy that will be covering you for up to three years, or thirty six months, most of these kinds of policies are restricted to twelve months, or one year, of coverage or even less. Short run policies are excellent for robust people that are processing through some sort of transition period – for instance, modern college seniors that are waiting for sickness insurance advantages at their first job to start. The efficacious term here is “robust” – short run sickness insurance policies are set forth below, which means that the insurance provider company must be gratified that you are not probable to make many claims for the duration of the current policy.

How much would I need to spend on it?

Short run sickness insurance is tending to be essentially low-priced than the other kinds of insurance, involving COBRA prolongation coverage. Some customers might qualify for exhaustive coverage for less than hundred dollars per month. This is the reason some people who are losing their job-based insurance select short run policies gladly than choosing COBRA. Nevertheless, if you fail to select and discharge your COBRA prolongation coverage, you will definitely lose some of the buyer rights – involving your right to coverage of any pre-clinical medical situations, and the right to obtain a constant personal health insurance policy at a subsequent date.

If you settle to purchase a short run health insurance policy, make certain you comprehend what you are obtaining for your finances. If you discover a policy for fifty dollars per month, but it has a three thousand dollars deductible per damage or sickness, you will be returning for practically all of your medicinal costs out of your own pocket. This kind of policy would only maintain you if you underwent an exceedingly expensive damage or sickness. Make certain you read your policy documents and comprehend what your out-of-pocket costs are probably going to be.

So, what is it covering?

Short run policies normally do not cover certain prophylactic medicinal care or pre-clinical situations. Nevertheless, if you become sick or you are injured while covered under a short run health insurance coverage policy, any extraordinary facilities, admission to hospital, diagnostic program, or medical supervision visitation costs you endure must be covered under your health insurance policy. During just the length of time that your health care costs might be connected to a certain sickness or damage that you’ve had experienced within the limit of the term of your coverage, you have to be covered.

Companies sometimes offer insurance coverage to the spouses of their employers. This, unfortunately, doesn’t mean the unmarried partner of a co-worker can get coverage as well. There is such a document as Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) under which the employers are not required to grant health insurance to any of their employees, their spouses, gay or lesbian couples as well as unmarried couples of opposite sex. ERISA doesn’t support the deviation from this act and drastically opposes against the provision of insurance for employees and dependents to extend coverage to domestic partners.

Despite of this fact there are thousands and thousands of companies or employers all over the country that have started to point out domestic partner benefits in the past several years. They are offering the help and the number of these employers continues to grow. It is some sort of trend that has taken over the country. The experts, dealing with the problems of employment claim that if nothing changes, small companies will start to follow the example of large employers that have given the world such thing as “domestic partner benefit plans”.

To add some more information to this case, we have to say that some local laws, as well as state laws, have actually been viewed in benefit of domestic partner rights. Cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle are managing the problem of same-sex benefits as well as benefits for married couples. Vermont has adopted the country’s first ever “civil union” law by which the same-sex couples are given all of the benefits and rights the opposite-sex couples have. Provisions on the health insurance for those people are still being considered and the outcome is still not being discussed.

Let’s talk about the benefits that are offered to domestic partners. If the domestic partners are offered benefits, it doesn’t mean they are common. The coverage here will totally depend on the employer. Benefits that could be granted may differ from: long-term care, group life insurance, family and bereavement leave, and most commonly, health, dental, and vision insurance. It also should be mentioned that the definition of domestic partner may also vary and can’t be explain in one certain way. There are companies that will include same-sex couples, unmarried opposite-sex couples, and common law marriages. There are also companies that only deal with same-sex couples explaining it the following way: the opposite-sex couples could be getting married to obtain spousal benefits while getting married, when same-sex couples do not have this possibility. The term is not the major problem though. The employers that agree to offer health insurance coverage require the domestic partners to sign an affidavit by which they state that they are in a good serious and long-lasting relationship. They may also need a couple to be living together for some time before they offer some benefits to them This way the employer is sure he doesn’t get fooled for any beneficial reasons and purposes that a potential insured couple might have. Unmarried couples have to go though some trouble getting health insurances but this only brings them closer.
